Sprotbrough is really two places sharing one name. There is the old village around St Mary’s and Main Street on the west side of the A1(M), and the ordinary suburban half on the Doncaster side of the motorway. They are different jobs.

A bit about Sprotbrough
The historic core is magnesian limestone, often rendered, under clay pantiles and slate. Doncaster Council designated the conservation area in December 1970 and calls the limestone boundary walls an important and extensive feature. Two more conservation areas sit alongside: Cusworth, designated December 1981, and Newton, designated March 1992.
Sprotbrough Park, centred on Park Drive, was laid out on the grounds of Sprotbrough Hall after it was demolished in 1926. Local history has it that the Hall’s spare stone went into the foundations of the Brompton Road houses.
Down Boat Lane the ground drops into the Don Gorge to Lower Sprotbrough, the Boat Inn and Sprotbrough Flash. The gorge is a wooded magnesian limestone valley, and the parish has 21 listed buildings including two at Grade I: St Mary’s Church and Cusworth Hall.
