About sixteen miles from Doncaster, roughly twenty-five minutes on the A630 or via the M18 and M1.
What the housing is actually like in Rotherham
This matters more than it sounds. The kind of property decides the access, the reach and the price, so here is what the census actually says rather than a guess.
Borough-wide figures. Rotherham is a semi-detached borough at nearly 50%, against 31.5% for England. The neighbourhood variation is enormous though: Kimberworth Park is 2.3% detached, Ravenfield and Bramley North is 42.5%.
A bit about Rotherham
Drop down into Masbrough or Eastwood and you are in pre-1919 terrace country. Masbrough and Bradgate is 50.6% built before 1919 and 43.1% terraced, with tight frontages straight onto the pavement.
Climb up to Herringthorpe and it flips completely: 48.6% of the stock there went up in the 1930s and 75.4% of homes are semi-detached. Kimberworth Park next door is an almost pure post-war estate, 84.8% of it built between 1945 and 1964.
Head east past the M18 and it changes again. Wickersley’s Listerdale is a 1920s and 30s grid where, in the words of the village’s own design code, each property has a unique brick and rendered pattern. Wickersley West is large detached houses either side of Bawtry Road. Ravenfield and Bramley North is 42.5% detached with a quarter of it built in the 2000 to 2008 boom.

The steel dust story is out of date
Templeborough closed in 1993 and is now Magna. The Aldwarke electric arc furnaces have not made steel since July 2024. Rotherham Council revoked its nitrogen dioxide Air Quality Management Areas at Wortley Road, Brinsworth, Catcliffe, Blackburn and Meadowbank in March 2025 after three years below the national objective. Wickersley and Bramley are where the big jobs are
Between 2010 and 2020, 78% of planning permissions in Wickersley were for four to six bedroom homes and only 6% for three-bedroom. Large modern detached property with long gutter runs, and 34.4% of residents are 60 or over.
Two Maltbys, two miles apart
Maltby East is 34% pre-1930 and 40.1% terraced. Maltby West and Hellaby is 42.8% detached with 28.2% built between 1973 and 1982. Same town name, completely different quote.
Wickersley has less tree cover than people assume
Forestry Commission canopy figures put Wickersley at 11.9% and Boston Castle at 25.1%. The big Wickersley gardens are lawn and paving rather than canopy, so sap is much less of an issue there than in the leafier wards.

Is Rotherham too far for a regular round?
No. Rotherham is one of the strongest parts of the round outside Doncaster itself, and the S65 and S66 postcodes actually cross the borough boundary at Braithwell and Hellaby, so it is a continuation of the same run rather than a special trip.
Which parts of Rotherham do you work most?
The eastern side. Wickersley, Bramley, Ravenfield, Hellaby, Maltby, Thrybergh and Thurcroft sit closest to us and that is where we already have a lot of regulars.
Do you do the terraces in the town as well as the estates?
Yes, though we are honest that the eastern suburbs are where the round is densest. Message us with the street and we will tell you whether we can do a good job on a proper schedule or not.
