A bit about Mexborough
The conservation area was designated on 8 June 2004 and is centred on Bank Street. Its appraisal describes the architecture as mainly Victorian and early Edwardian, clearly relating to a single period of development, with buildings ranging from single-storey shop parades to two and three storey terraces. Sandstone was the traditional material with some red brick, and the principal roof material is slate.
One line in that appraisal is unusual and worth knowing: within the conservation area there are no listed structures at all. Its significance is as a cohesive grouping of social, civic and commercial buildings from one period rather than as a collection of individually important ones. Mexborough station is listed and visible from the end of Station Road, just outside the boundary.
The Old Market Hall on Market Place was built in 1880 as an indoor market and town hall, and the appraisal records that all its windows are large paned sliding timber sashes with stone surrounds.
