Conisbrough is a limestone town on a hill rather than a valley-bottom brick town, and that changes the work. It sits on the magnesian limestone belt about fifty metres up, and the whole place steps down the slope beneath a Norman keep.

What the housing is actually like in Conisbrough
This matters more than it sounds. The kind of property decides the access, the reach and the price, so here is what the census actually says rather than a guess.
Overwhelmingly semi-detached, well above Doncaster’s 46% and England’s 32%. Around 17% predates 1919 and 23% is interwar, most of that Conanby. A further 24% went up in the single decade after 1945, an unusually heavy post-war council programme. Figures cover Conisbrough and Conanby but exclude Denaby Main, which is a different place entirely.
A bit about Conisbrough
The conservation area was designated in January 1974 and its boundary amended in October 2022. The appraisal explains the fabric through the geology: the village sits on the southern magnesian limestone belt, and the underlying stone produces creamy limestone buildings under clay pantiles. The oldest properties are coursed or ashlar blocks of that creamy white stone, including the church and the castle.
Alongside it are two other materials. Red brick with slate roofs, which the appraisal attributes partly to industrial expansion and the brick works that stood on Doncaster Road, and render applied over stone or brick. Buildings are described as simple in form, narrow span, with fairly steep roofs at 35 to 45 degrees and vertically proportioned windows that were traditionally timber sashes.
The signature detail is the walls. Almost every street has limestone boundary walls with rounded coping stones, and large limestone gateposts with rounded tops, which the appraisal calls a feature of the magnesian limestone belt. Castle Avenue is a narrow lane lined with them, and Castle Hill winds uphill between walls through a well-treed setting.

Questions we get asked in Conisbrough
Do you cover Conanby and Denaby as well?
Yes. Conanby was built between 1923 and 1926, around four hundred houses for the Denaby colliery families, and it is straightforward work. Denaby Main is mostly 1970s and 80s rebuild and is different again.
